FUNDING SOLUTIONS

WE BELIEVE THERE'S A FINANCIAL PATH FORWARD FOR YOU

At zPods, we're mindful that not every family in need has the resources to invest in our unique sleep solution. For this reason, we're constantly looking for ways we can help with funding. We and the families we work with have uncovered several different funding sources to help cover the costs of the bed. Those include the following:

Below are some tips on how to make these funding solutions work for you. These are tips that we've learned through the experience of incredible parents and caregivers like you who have trail-blazed a financial path forward for others by taking the time necessary to get to know these programs. If you have questions about any one of these options, please contact us. Although we have limited bandwidth and cannot guarantee your individual success, we want to give you all the resources we can.

INSURANCE

Although insurance coverage for a zPods bed is not a guarantee, we are seeing great progress for families who pursue this path. And with time and the eventual completion of our clinical trials, we believe that coverage will become even more possible through more insurance providers. Below are the key steps for pursuing insurance coverage for zPods.

STEP ONE: ACQUIRE A LETTER OF MEDICAL NECESSITY (LMN)

This process is fairly straightforward. Schedule an appointment with you or your child’s primary care physician and request an LMN for a zPods bed. This is effectively a prescription. It is important that you are as specific as possible about the struggles you are facing and that you reinforce your belief that given our past results, having a zPods bed in your home will be beneficial to the health and well-being of your household and the individual you are wanting the zPods bed for. In addition, be sure to describe the features of the bed that you believe are helpful for your situation. For example, we find that enclosure is a critical feature for many individuals we work with because of the feeling of safety that it creates and how that feeling decreases anxiety to make initiation of sleep easier.

STEP TWO: FIND A MEDICAL SUPPLY COMPANY OR DURABLE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT (DME) PROVIDER

There are numerous companies across the United States, big and small, that are able to bill insurance companies directly for medical equipment. These companies are able to do so because by law they must have an NPI (National Provider Identifier) number. Being approved for and having an active NPI number allows a company in this space to bill insurance companies directly.

STEP THREE: MAKE CONTACT WITH THE MEDICAL SUPPLY OR DME COMPANY OF YOUR CHOICE

The selection and type of medical supply companies vary by region and state. Some of these companies only specialize in areas related to CPAP, wound care, surgical instruments, etc. With this in mind, it is very important for you to confirm that the companies you are contacting either already carry medical beds or appear likely to want to carry them. Sometimes the best way to find this out is to call them and ask.

Once you have made contact with one of these companies, it is imperative you let them know that you have a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) for a zPods bed and would like them to facilitate the transaction of one for you. It is likely they will ask you for a medical billing code. In this case, we are using HCPCS code E1399 (miscellaneous) for the zPods. If they ask for information that you are unsure about, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are more than happy to send over any information they require along with our dealer pricing sheet.

STEP FOUR: AWAITING APPROVAL OR DENIAL

Scenario 1: Approval

If a medical supply company you have reached out to agrees to move forward, you are one step closer to getting a zPods bed paid for through insurance. You will need to forward our contact information over to them (see above) so we can provide them with the information we require to complete the transaction. Our team is capable of billing the company directly for a zPods bed and working out the rest. If everything goes according to plan, the medical supply company will purchase the zPods bed from us and then bill the insurance company directly for the cost. Although some have a different process, in most cases the medical supply company will ship the order directly to your door and have a team of technicians available to assist you in delivery, assembly, and technical support. Be sure to ask the company what their policy is. Once a medical supply company in your area agrees to facilitate the transaction of a zPods bed, please share this information with us AND the rest of the disability community so that we can encourage and educate other families with what you've learned.

Scenario 2: Denial

If a medical supply company you have reached out to denies your request, do not be discouraged. In most cases, there are many other similar companies in your state you may have better success with. We recommend to keep trying and keep calling—persistence is key here. And we are happy to help in any way we can.

INVITATION: We are constantly learning about how to approach insurance companies. If you succeed in doing so and have advice on how we can refine our approach for the good of the families we serve, please contact us. We would love to learn everything we can from you and your success.

DISABILITY WAIVERS AND
OTHER STATE FUNDING

Most, if not all, states in the United States provide some form of financial support for disabled individuals. These programs are too many and often too complex to describe on this page in any meaningful fashion. That being said, the steps to approaching state funding programs for assistance are virtually similar to the steps listed in our insurance section. We recommend you read that section carefully and follow the steps enumerated there.

The zPods team has worked with many individuals who have successfully accessed state funding sources. We've even spoken directly with state workers to educate them about the need that many disabled individuals have for better sleep. We will continue to encourage states to assist individuals in the disability community. If you are facing hurdles with this kind of support, please contact us—we may be able to help.

INVITATION: We are constantly learning about how to approach state funding sources. If you succeed in doing so and have advice on how we can refine our approach for the good of the families we serve, please contact us. We would love to learn everything we can from you and your success.

ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY PROGRAMS

Most, if not all, states in the United States have an assistive technology program. These programs receive funding through the Assistive Technology Acts passed by U.S. Congress. These programs are typically characterized by the following features:

  • Device demonstration: This feature allows families and individuals to get hands-on experience with the device.

  • Device loan: This feature allows families to bring the device home to try it out for a limited time. (Due to the size of our produce and the cost of shipping, it is not likely that a device loan program will allow for families to try our beds out in this manner.)

  • Reutilization: This feature allows families to look for used devices that are still helpful.

  • State financing: This feature allows families to purchase assistive technology at extraordinarily advantageous rates.

In order to qualify for support from an assistive technology program, a child must have an "assistive technology need." Programs differ from state to state, and it is worth contacting the assistive technology program from your state to see whether they can support you in any manner.

CHARITABLE NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS

Many of our customers have had success getting funding through assistance from charitable nonprofit organizations. These organizations differ in budget and mission, but it's always worth asking them if they can help you with your situation.

When approaching a nonprofit, it helps to have the support of your child's pediatrician, occupational therapist, or other professionals. This support provides evidence to nonprofit organizations that they're not just buying your child a cool bed (though it is very, very cool!). It also helps to focus less on our bed and more on your own personal story. These organizations are not as concerned about us as they are about making you and your family are well. They care and want to help.

Organizations that have helped families with securing a zPods bed include Variety – the Children's Charity, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and local charities that want to help the children in their communities.

INVITATION: If you are able to secure support from a charitable organization, please share the news with us. We are cataloguing organizations by location so that we can share that information with other families in need.

FUNDRAISING

Some folks have tried every alternative but still can't find a funding source that will cover the costs of a zPods bed. For those folks, the last resort they have is to draw on the assistance of others. We've worked with a number of parents who have done so successfully and would like to share some of their tips here:

  • If using a crowdfunding platform (e.g., GoFundMe, Fundly, Givebutter, etc.), find these platform's tips on creating a successful campaign. Most of these platforms, like GoFundMe and Fundly, have tips of their own. They're not hiding the ball on how people achieve their fundraising goals. They want you to succeed, just like we do. Be sure to take them seriously.

  • Your story is wonderful! Don't hesitate to share it. There may be things that are too personal to share openly, but we believe that the more people know, the more they'll want to help. (Also, remember, this is not a story about a bed but about your own situation.)

  • Your friends and family want to give. We're always amazed by the generosity of others. This is a great opportunity to work together to see good happen.

  • A successful fundraising campaign requires daily work. It’s tempting to make a GoFundMe page and then hope that people will somehow find it and give. However, GoFundMe and other crowdfunding platforms work best when we take a little time daily to share them both on social media and with specific people who might be able to help.

We hope this advice is useful. Don't hesitate to reach out to us for ideas. We're happy to listen and give suggestions.

INVITATION: If you are successful at raising funds for the need of your own child and would like to share advice with us to share with others, please contact us. We're always trying to build a better understanding of how to make this approach successful
